SoulNRnB's GEMS - The 80's Part 3

Were on to the 3rd part of my trips through the decades from the 70's to the 00's.

Some real favorites of mine from the decade that started so great musically for soul fans, but soon ushered in the onset of "Acid House" and New Jack Swing (Which in my opinion hasn't stood the test of time).

Nothing more to say really, except give you the tracklist!

1.Beau Williams - All because of you
2.Glenn Jones - You're the only one I love
3.Heaven & Earth - I really love you
4.Thelma Houston - It must be Love
5.Robert Brookins - Our Lives
6.Prime Time - I owe it to myself
7.Gladys Knight & the Pips - Save the Overtime
8.Jones Girls - Keep it coming

Hope you enjoy, Grizz back at the weekend so hold tight!

DJ Grizz- Soul Niceness 56

Morning Mixtapers and we've another group of freshly dug up rare grooves from the shelves- its Soul Niceness Vol. 56.

The ten starts with a track from an LP picked up on a trip, many years ago, to the US by Coldfire- (in amongst all the family touristy stuff I had to spend a day hitting the big record shops/warehouses!). Some Mass Production boogie and Love Unlimited Orch sampled goodness follow, early Dazz Band incarnation- Kinsman Dazz feature, a wicked little seductive number from Lowrell Simon I acquired back in the day from one of those small Independent Soul/Dance Record Shops in Walthamstow, and we end with recently passed Soul/Folk/Jazz talent Richie Havens.

Enjoy the Bank Holiday if you are in the UK  & if you are off to carnival check out the Norman J Good Times Roadshow for a taste of the old n new Soul/RnB.
See you next Sunday, Mr S up soon.

SoulNRnB's Smoooooooth WHITE LABEL

Been a while since I Tipp-Ex'd out a record label so you all couldn't see what was playing, so were back at it again!

This edition slips back and forth through the years better than Marty McFly's Del'orean.

We've got Jazz funk from the 70's; A UK soulstress with a rare tune; An 80's monster from half of a great Production/Writing duo; Some early 90's heat from the children of vocal royalty; Pete Rock producing a 00's great whose still recording today.

Plus, much more. Slip the mix on and either recognize or be surprised. Soulfulness guaranteed!

DJ Grizz- George Duke Mix

Morning Mixtapers! Now I was planning to feature George Duke in a future artist mix but due to his recent sad passing I thought it right to post a selection of the great mans work. Equally adept at producing wicked fast jazz tracks and sublime jazz-funk anthems he was one of the greats in his field and part of that late 70's and early 80's golden era for the music.

Here's 10 of my favourites from the big fella! Includes jazz-funk nuggets like I Want You For Myself and I Just Want to Love You- with long time collaborator Stanley Clarke, the jazz funk summer anthem of all anthems- Brazilian Love Affair, a more recent favourite with I Wanna Know from 2005 and topped off with the cherry that is Morning Sun plus 5 more great, great tunes.

Catch you in a week!

DJ Grizz - Slave Mix

Time for an artist mix from a band that features a lot on this blog -the sublime Ohio funksters Slave. Slaves tracks formed a large part of my soundtrack growing up in the late 70's and early 80's with one of their mixtapes never far from my 'ghetto blaster' (try taking one of them on the Central Line!) or car tape player. I even saw them live as an 18 year old at Hammersmith in 1984 (if my memory serve me right) and they had bass lines to kill!!!

10 tunes including Slide, Party Lights, Are you Ready For Love, Wait For Me, and a funk 'ballad' in Starting Over. Seeing as I left out monsters like Snapshot, Dreamin' and Just a Touch theres even plenty of room for a part 2!

Back in a week with more Soul Niceness- Mr S up soon!

RIP George Duke

As reported yesterday, musician, arranger, producer and all round nice guy George Duke passed away.

An artist who varied his musical styles from jazz to funk, from latin to pop, to r&b and rock, he was a man of immense talent, much loved by his peers.

For me though, I will always love his "Brazilian Love Affair" LP.

From the first time I heard that, it was all Duke, all day, any day. RIP
