DJ Ridym - Brit Funk & Rare Groove

Welcome listeners to part 2 of my Brit Funk & Rare Groove mix full of Jazz Funk nuggets from back in the day.

We set the funk-o-meter dial to HIGH beginning with a very rare and unreleased Jamiroquai cut that quickly sets the tempo for the next few tracks from Atmosphere, Incognito, AWB and Heatwave. This is Jazz Funk at its best people and the fact that it's British makes you wanna put that extra dip, turn and shuffle in your dance step!

Changing the tempo slightly with a Paradise track and an early Loose Ends gem that for me sort of signalled a change at the time and a new sound for British soul groups and ringing in the change that there was a new sound on the horizon were groups like Total Contrast, Second Image, Cool Notes. This is where our unique Brit sound came into its own as a result of a number of British influences such as the casual scene, Lovers Rock and weirdly enough football for as we know football fans are well known for their love of chanting which made its way to the dance floors and eventually to the music itself with groups like Beggars & Co.

Hope you enjoy and look forward to another instalment of my Brit Funk mixes some time in the near future but until then as they say in radio world keep it locked onthe Soulmixtape Blog!

2. Atmosphere - Interplay
3. Incognito - Sunburn

9. Total Contrast - Be With You Tonight
10. Loose Ends - Don't Hold Back Your Love
11. Cache - Where Is My Sunshine

DJ Grizz- Aretha Franklin

A long overdue tribute today to one of the greatest voices in music... period! Ms Aretha Franklin! A string of hits in the 60's, 70's and 80's , the biggest star on Atlantic Records, the Queen of Soul still performs today at the age of 75! Here's a selection of my favourites from her huge back catalogue.

We start with her electrifying version of a Marvin/Tammi hit, a Rare Groove party fave features in It Only Happens, we've a great No.1 from 1973 in Until You Come Back To Me, there's Arethas take on the Nina Simone anthem , Young Gifted and Black and we end on the marvellous Natural Woman.. plus more Aretha greats!

Catch you soon Soul guys and girls!

DJ Ridym - Erykah Meets Nai Palm

Welcome bloggers to my new mix where this time round I thought I'd shine the soulmixtape spotlight on two of my favourite artists Erykah Badu and Nai Palm. Both very talented and accomplished in their own right and both are on top of their game.

Relatively new kids on the block Nai Palm, along with her group Hiatus Kaiyote, stem from Melbourne Australia bringing a fresh new creative soul sound married with Nai Palms distinctly abstract lyrics. With 2 albums bagged already since their conception, Tawk Tomahawk and Choose Your Weapon, plus some great collaborations I can see them going from strength to strength and are definitely here for the long run.

Speaking of long runs, who better to match up for this mix than the queen of Neo Soul since back in the day and still going strong Ms Erykah Badu. Erykah brings the funk, of that there's no denying but for this mix I thought we'd stick to the Rhodes based tracks and keep it mellow.  What can I say about this lady's accomplishments that hasn't been said already? Erykah has collaborated with the best of them but none more so than J Dilla. Telphone was written by Badu the night Dilla passed away. In a recent interview Badu explained that whilst undergoing treatment for his illness Dilla would hallucinate a conversation between him and Ol Dirty Bastard where ODB would tell him what 'bus' to catch on his way to the afterlife. New Amerykah being her most recent work just shows that Ms Badu is here to stay and we look forward to new albums from her and Nai Palm real soon.

As always I hope you enjoy and we'll be back at the weekend with some more mixes so make sure you check back on the blog but until then, PEACE.

1. Hiatus Kaiyote - Rainbow Rhodes
