SoulNRnB's Slow Jams

Although Grizz and I incorporate the odd slow jam here and there in our mixes, we haven't dedicated a mix to them as a genre. Until now.

Again, Ive not put any limitations on decade or music type, just good music. Great artists like Anita Baker, Gregory Porter, Howard Johnson and many more provide the soundtrack to any romantic evening.

When it comes to this music, this mix is only the tip, of the tip, of the iceberg, so expect many more. In fact, here's a challenge. A couple of years back, Grizz and I went on a "Soundclash" of mixes in a soulful Disco vein. How about you do mix number 2 in the Slow Jam mixes Grizz? Might be fun!

Mix is down below, have a great weekend and Grizz will be back shortly. Let's see if he takes the challenge eh?

SoulNRnB's Street Sounds Sessions 116

Been a while, but were back with new music in the form of Street Sounds Sessions 116.

Cover star and Hip Hop producer Black Milk gets some friends in (Robert Glasper & Dwele) and creates a blinding groove in the shape of "Sonny Jr"; More great Jazzy Hip Hop from Maurice "Mobetta" Brown and Talib Kweli; Some great soul music in the shape of the best thing Glenn Lewis has recorded since his first monster LP, new upstarts The Internet and Water Seed (Who have a great LP out on Bandcamp you should check out).

Add to that the feel good sound of Charlie Wilson and a tune from Slakah the Beatchild that wont feature on Soul Movement Vol 2, and youve got a mix to look forward too.

Tracklist features on the mix below, enjoy, and see you guys and gals next week.

DJ Grizz- Herbie Hancock Mix

This mornings contribution is from Jazz Funk maestro Herbie Hancock. From his roots on Blue Note records and with Miles Davis in the 60's throughout the synth led Jazz Funk filled 70's and 80's he was adept at the straight ahead jazz as well as the SoulJazz/ Jazz Funk featured in this mix. Indeed many many years ago, as a teenage fledgling collector, his 1979 'Best of' LP was one of my 1st purchases after I was allocated a space on the 'LP' shelf next my dads rock collection (above the family 'music system'!).

The mix begins with club fave Saturday Night (a regular on the Greg Edwards playlist I recall), a jazz funk drumming lesson on Just Around The Corner, includes I Thought it Was You (an up-tempo alternate take), Chameleon, Stars in Your Eyes and more classics than you can shake a stick at!

Back in rare groove 'Niceness' territory next week... up next Mr S!

SoulNRnB's RnB. THE REMIX EDITION.

After the success of the first mix, I've decided to make part 2 of my 90's RnB series.

To recap: Modern day RnB seems to consist of Euro House beats and very little songwriting ability. Back in the 90's when the term R&B was rebranded as RnB to consist of all things commercial in black music, it meant a pop/soul melody over a dance beat.

These mixes look to remind us of what they consisted of, and this mix focuses on some of the great remixes of that time included DJ Premiers remix of D'Angelo, various AllStar mixes, and a favorite of mine from the UK's own Linslee.

Tracklist on Mixcloud.

And for those that missed it, here's Part 1.

Grizz back on Sunday, Ill see you next week with more soulfullness!

Dj Grizz- Mellow Grooves Vol 19

I haven't posted a Mellow mix for a while but they forecast heavy rain in the UK today (and snow in November!) so a good time to chill out and have a duvet day.

My chilled out 10 starts with an MFSB instrumental, the late great George Duke features, there's a latin take on the Beatles from Claudia Telles, some Temptations from the Masterpiece LP, and we finish with 2 laid back jazz gems from Milt Jackson/Ray Brown and then Azymuth.

Catch you in a week for more of the old stuff!

SoulNRnB's White Label Mix. October 2013

Its getting to be something of a tradition on the blog now.

Various tunes, from various soulful genre's, from various decades.

That's it. That's all your getting. Just like those clubs from back in the day that spun their selections guarded by that white disc over the record label.

So sit back, press play, and trust me to play a selection that will inspire, surprise and educate!!

Grizz back at the weekend, see you next week mixtapers.

(P.S. Looks like Mixcloud is trying to guess some of the tunes....no way it will get them all!! Mwah ha ha!!)

DJ Grizz- Soul Niceness 58

Time to give those crates another rattle with volume 58 of Soul Niceness, as usual packed full of 70's and 80's rare grooves and soul nuggets.

The 10 starts with a Jimmy Ruffin club track, includes a Tavares gem, both Jimmy Bo Horne and Gene Page get a little saucy, there's a Bobby Lyle blinder, and we finish with blue eyed soul maestro Michael MacDonalds first solo track from the early 70's (big with the Northern Soul posse!).

Back with a Jazz Funk file next week, Mr S pops up midweek if he can get out his 'end of Breaking Bad' depression in time .
