#TheSoulMixtape Tape No.54 as heard on Nuwaveradio

Tape 54 of #TheSoulMixtape explores the influences of that U.K Phenomenon, Broken Beat.

Whilst the mix opens and closes with Broken champions like Bugz in the Attic, Dego, Kaidi Tatham, Kenny Dope and Marc Mac, sandwiched in between are its influences with tracks spanning Afro Beat to Soul to Jazz Funk to Electro to Disco.

DJ Grizz- Rose Royce

Today we have a Los Angeles group who were massive in the mid to late 70's. With a string of dancefloor and ballad hits they were one of those bands who had major 'pop' success and still kept their Soul/Funk credibility. Ladies and Gents …. Rose Royce!

We begin with a serious piece of Disco/Funk in Is It Love You're After, there's the tune that spawned many a UK retro club night Car Wash from the big 70's film, there's the sublime and a little underrated - Still In Love, better known as a hit for Mary J we've the original I'm Going Down and end on one of the greatest Soul ballads ever in Wishing On A Star... plus more!

Have a Soulful Easter Mixtapers!

Today’s artist mix is a Motor City vocal group par excellance The Detroit Spinners. Formed in the 50’s the group, in various forms, had hits in the 60’s 70’s and 80’s on firstly Motown then Atlantic (having been championed by label mate Aretha Franklin). They still gig to this day - heres a seclection of my favorites.

Todays artist mix is one of the all time great vocalist on one of the greatest labels - Philadelphia Internationals Mr Theodore 'Teddy' Pendergrass. Starting life with the wonderful Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes in the early 70's before going solo in 1976, he was equally adept at belting out big production club hits and heavy ballads. TP was making good music up until just before he passed in 2010. Here's some sublime Teddy!!

The Tedfest starts with 2 disco nuggets in Bad Luck and (the ruthless!) I Don't Love You Anymore, there's the hit When Somebody Wants You Back, and ends on 2 class ballads in The Whole Towns Laughing At Me and Love TKO... plus more Teddy goodness.

Todays ‘artist’ mix features the vocal backing group for the Walrus of Love himself, Barry White... its Love Unlimited. Part of the Barry White stable and featuring his wife Glodean (and her unfeasibly long fingernails), the trio had a long and successful career of their own with their big production values, known for seductive Soul and the finest Rare Grooves and full string orchestra backing to boot (The Love Unlimited Orchestra of course!)....heres my selection:

We feature massive Rare Groove scene favourites in If You Want Me and Move Me No Mountain, we’ve the vocal version of the Disco hit Loves Theme and big ballads like Whisper You Love Me and Walking In The Rain With The One I Love plus more Love Unlimited magic.

DJ Grizz- Chic Mix

A mix today from one the most successful Soul-Funk-Disco bands of the 70's and 80's - Chic. With the backbone of guitarist Nile Rodgers, bassist Bernard Edwards and the original drummer Tony Thompson plus a host of session musicians and singers they were the sound of late 70's Disco. Their sound was in demand as backing musicians for Sister Sledge, Diana Ross, Carly Simon and others and they must be one of the most sampled groups in recent history.

We've all the classics like Forbidden Lover, I Want Your Love and Good Times, there's their instrumental cut of Shelia B's Spacer, the classic sample in Soup For One and ends on a wind down nugget in Warm summer Night... plus more Nile and Bernard to enjoy!
