DJ Ridym - Old Skool Hip Hop Volume 1

Welcome mixtapers to the first of my new mix series titled Old Skool Hip Hop where I'll be featuring hip hop from east coast, west coast and everything in between.

Volume 1 kicks off with Mos Def's excellent version of Jam On It followed by the original from Newcleus. More electro hip hop from Afrika Bambaataa, Madlib and Man Parish before switching to hardcore east coast rap from the Shaolin kingpins Wu-Tang Clan with tracks from Raekwon, Ghostface Killer and Ol Dirty Bastard AKA ODB.

We then go west coast gangster rap with Snoop and NWA before finishing neatly with Grand Puba and I Like It. Mr Puba, one of our unsung hero's of rap was once a member of rap trio Brand Nubians and prior to this released his debut album with rap group Masters of Ceremony in 1988. Since then he has collaborated with other big name artists such as Missy Elliot, Mary J Blige, Big Daddy Kane, KRS-1, Fat Joe and Q-tip and is still making music with his recent release last year titled Black To The Future.

Enjoy and I'll be back real soon but until then look out for mixes from DJ's SoulnRnB and Grizz.

DJ Ridym - Old Skool 80's Volume 2

Welcome listeners to the Soul Mixtape and this time out we're gonna take a trip in our Delorean and head back to the glorious 80's for some timeless R&B classics.

The cover photo featuring Rene Moore and Angela Winbush acts as the perfect road sign to let you know you've arrived at your destination. The duo faithfully known as Rene & Angela recorded just 3 albums before their break up in '86 but despite this Angela went on to have a long and successful career into the 90's. I suggest if you get the chance check out the video of It's the real thing you'll see a very young Don Cheadle bustin' some ridiculous dance moves that certainly got me laughing I guess we all had to start somewhere!

Other artists in this mix such as Atlantic Star, The Funkmasters, Juicy and The Controllers all contributed to making this the decade for R&B and Boogie (we'll not mention the new jack swing!)

Hope you enjoy it as much as I did and look out for volume 3 next time. Jah Bless

DJ Ridym - RnB Sessions 10

Howdie mixtapers hope you're enjoying the fantastic weather we're having right now and looking forward to RnB Sessions 10 with that summer vibe that'll hopefully help convince the hot weather to stay around until summer.

This time around I'm rubbing slightly against the grain with some upfront mellow jazz tracks with Sacha Vee, Robert Glasper, RC & The Grits and Ben Locle Soul. Mixing it up slightly shaken but definitely not stirred with some funk from Ms P-Funk herself Georgia Anne Muldrow who also provides her signature sound to the Robert Glasper track The Consequences Of Jealousy teaming up with Meshell Ndegeocello with her unmistakeable voice.

For me rappers Odissee and Chance The Rapper complements this mix just right before I close the deal with a monster  jazz funk nugget by Josef Leimberg.

Hope you enjoy this week's session, make sure you check back with us real soon for some more mixes from the team here at The Soul Mixtape. Peace

1. Sacha Vee - Music Child

DJ Grizz- Roy Ayers Mix

Something from the daddy of Jazz Funk today... Mr Roy Ayers. 77 years young this year and still playing on the circuit he was a 70's pioneer of the Jazz Funk sound. Firstly with his band Ubiquity then as a solo artist on the Polydor label Mr Ayer's grooves were a staple of the Soul/jazz Funk club and weekender scene throughout the 70' and 80's. Here's some of his best stuff.

We kick off with a Club monster in Running Away, a cool cut from 1982 in Turn me Loose, there's a collaboration with Crusader Wayne Henderson, an anthem with Love Will Bring Us Back Together, the sublime Searching and end on the huge Everybody Loves The Sunshine- here in a slightly alternate version.... plus many more jazz funk memories from back in the day.

Enjoy your week Mixtapers!

DJ Ridym - Chapter & Verse of DUB

Get your bass levels up and make sure your eardrums are prepped as it's Chapter & Verse of DUB with yours truly the resident dub chemist!

This mix has just the right selection for those of you who like your dub bass maxed out with killer cuts from my favourite sound systems Aba Shanti-I, Jah Shaka and the Vanguard of Dub Iration Steppas plus more from Horace Andy, Mad Professor and Power Steppas.

Mad Professor and Scientist before him were some of the the best dub producers/mixers of their day bringing new ideas with a wide range of dub special effects. I will definitely play something from Scientist next time out probably on my regular Reggae Rockers mix so look out for that one.

To end the mix I went with Roman Stewart's Rice & Peas and followed that with the Iration Steppas version. The Iration Steppas' exclusive dub plate cut of Michael Prophet's you been talking would have been THE perfect track to sign off with but unfortunately that little gem is an exclusive dub plate that I'm sure Mark Iration has under lock and key, but hey maybe one day I can get an exclusive play of it right here at the Soul Mixtape, here's hoping!

Enjoy the dub, Jah Bless.

1. Mad Professor - Afrocentric Dub
2. Mad Professor - Kathmandu
3. The Power Steppers - Aural Exciter
4. Horace Andy - Cuss Cuss in Dub
5. Aba Shanti-I - Ghetto
6. Iration Steppas - No War Dub
7. Jah Shaka & Mad Professor - Wig Wam
8. Aba Shanti-I - Tear Down Babylon
9. Roman Stewart - Rice & Peas
10. Iration Steppas - Rice & Peas
