DJ Grizz- Ramsey Lewis Mix

Todays mix gives itself over to the Jazz Funk side of things and one of the godfathers of the genre... Ramsey Lewis! Active from the 50's and forming the acclaimed Ramsey Lewis jazz trio in the 60's he crossed over in the 70's and 80's to produce some of the best Jazz Funk tunes out there. The Chicago native is still active at 83 years old! Here's a selection of my favourites of that era.
We kick off with his 1974 collaboration with Earth Wind and Fire with Sun Goddess, there's the equally funky Tequila Mockingbird, we've another collaboration in Spring High- this time with Stevie Wonder, we've a sublime ballad in Love Notes and end on his 80's version of a 60's hit - Les Fleur... plus more!
Back soon.

#TheSoulMixtape Tape no.42 as heard on Nuwaveradio

This volume of #TheSoulMixtape starts with Moonchild talking about what Neo Soul means to them and then taking a trip through some great examples of the genre before taking diversions into Reggae, Acid Jazz and straight up Soul territory!

Greats like The Isley Brothers mix with (what were) upstarts like Bilal and Van Hunt, all the way to those Acid Jazz Funkers from the UK Driza Bone and the Brand New Heavies.

More music coming your way from Ridym and Grizz so stay tuned and enjoy!

DJ Ridym - Brit Funk & Rare Groove 6

Back again and holding up the Brit flag for another trip down memory lane with some essential British soul from the late 80's and 90's. Moving away slightly from the earlier Jazz Funk themed mixes I've done previously with some signature tunes here such as Soul II Soul's classic summer groove Keep On Movin' followed by some of our big crossover artists such as Jaki Graham, Loose Ends and D'Influence. Central line's Walking Into Sunshine was a summer anthem too back then and Rick Clarke's I Really Wanna Be With You was frequently played on UK pirate radio airwaves at the time.

Max Beesley's earlier collaboration with Omar on Painful Truth is a great track with a nice jazz feel along with Young Disciples and US vocalist Carleen Anderson showing what can be done by independent labels such as Acid Jazz back then. Lots of good music all on independent labels the way it should be! Max later went on to be become an actor and star in Hotel Babylon, Mad Dogs and more notably Suits which also stared a newly appointed Duchess of Sussex no less!

Also in the mix we have Lynden David Hall's timeless Sexy Cinderella sounding a lot like D'Angelo and just as talented, Don-E with his own collaboration with the aforementioned D'Angelo showing what depth of quality and abundance of talent we had right here in the UK

As always hope you enjoy and I'll be back again with some more. One Love.

1. Soul II Soul - Keep On Moving
2. Rick Clarke - I Really Wanna Be With You
3. Jaki Graham - Heaven Knows
4. Loose Ends - Hangin' On A String

6. D'Influence - Magic
7. Young Disciples - Get Yourself Together
8. Max Beesley feat. Omar - Painful Truth
9. Don-e - So Cold
10. Lynden David Hall - Sexy Cinderella

#TheSoulMixtape Spotlight on Mtume-Lucas Productions

Reggie Lucas, one half of the famed Mtume-Lucas production team, passed away recently and I decided to highlight just how many classic soul tracks he helped write and produce along with James Mtume. Truth be told, this mix could have lasted at least double its length and still had tunes to spare, but condensed this mix to some faves and rarities.

From being a leading member of both Miles Davis and Roberta Flack's band, he went on to great success with James Mtume, writing and producing great LP's for the likes of Flack, Stephanie Mills, Phyllis Hyman and more as well as being a member of the Bands Mtume and Sunfire. Reggie went solo in the 80's producing many pop hits as well as Madonna's debut LP, but his hook up with Mtume, who he worked with in Miles band, is my favorite period for me with regard to his work.

So press play below and realise just how many legitimate classics these guys rolled out back in the day.

New shows from me on nuwaveradio.net and stick with the blog for more from Grizz and Ridym.
