Today we showcase the East London label (Bethnal Green boys!!) that championed the old time Funk, Soul, Jazz sounds by both signing new bands who still played in a revival style plus re-releasing long lost original cuts from various Soul Jazz and Funk legends. Formed in 1987 by legendary DJs Giles Peterson and Eddie Pillar they are still around and doing good work today.

DJ Ridym - Brit Funk & Rare Soul 8

Welcome once again Mixtapers to the latest instalment of the Brit Funk series and what a scorcher we have this time around. Our session kicks off with a dance floor banger from Take 3. There's 52nd Street with talented lead vocalist Diane Charlemange (RIP) who went on to work with Goldie on the eternal junglelist anthem Inner City Life.
We've got some real gems in Mirage, Nick Straker Band and The Hudson's summer groove show me you care. We end with a Cool Notes track and their first release, this rare reggae classic before they went more mainstream as a soul band. The track is a blues party anthem to this day so credit to their versatility and appeal.

DJ Grizz- The Brand New Heavies

Time for some Funk on this chilly morning and what better than some revival Funk from the daddies of the genre The Brand New Heavies. Formed in London in the late 80's, being signed to the legendary Acid Jazz stable, these guys had great success throughout the 90's and are still going strong- championing that 60's and 70's heavy Funk sound (and changing their vocalist every coupla years!). Here's a selection of my favourites.

We kick off with their 1st hit Dream Come True, we've a great piece of funkiness with Gimme One of Those, there's the hits Never Stop and Stay This Way and we end on their anthem with their version of Maria Muldar's Midnight at the Oasis... plus more Heaviness!

 This volume of #TheSoulMixtape starts with Moonchild talking about what Neo Soul means to them and then taking a trip through some great examples of the genre before taking diversions into Reggae, Acid Jazz and straight up Soul territory!

Greats like The Isley Brothers mix with (what were) upstarts like Bilal and Van Hunt, all the way to those Acid Jazz Funkers from the UK Driza Bone and the Brand New Heavies.

DJ Ridym - Brit Funk & Rare Groove 6

Back again and holding up the Brit flag for another trip down memory lane with some essential British soul from the late 80's and 90's. Moving away slightly from the earlier Jazz Funk themed mixes I've done previously with some signature tunes here such as Soul II Soul's classic summer groove Keep On Movin' followed by some of our big crossover artists such as Jaki Graham, Loose Ends and D'Influence. Central line's Walking Into Sunshine was a summer anthem too back then and Rick Clarke's I Really Wanna Be With You was frequently played on UK pirate radio airwaves at the time. 

Max Beesley's earlier collaboration with Omar on Painful Truth is a great track with a nice jazz feel along with Young Disciples and US vocalist Carleen Anderson showing what can be done by independent labels such as Acid Jazz back then. Lots of good music all on independent labels the way it should be! Max later went on to be become an actor and star in Hotel Babylon, Mad Dogs and more notably Suits which also stared a newly appointed Duchess of Sussex no less!

Also in the mix we have Lynden David Hall's timeless Sexy Cinderella sounding a lot like D'Angelo and just as talented, Don-E with his own collaboration with the aforementioned D'Angelo showing what depth of quality and abundance of talent we had right here in the UK
