DJ Ridym - Reggae Rockers 26 - Tribute to Lee 'Scratch' Perry

This mix is a tribute to one of the best producer/artists in reggae the late great Lee 'Scratch' Perry. There's literally loads I've missed off here, the man has done so much since his humble beginnings at Coxsone Studio.

For those of you not familiar with the man and his works outside of Bob Marley and his stint as a DJ on Grand Theft Auto's Blue Ark Radio I would urge you to dive in. I would describe him as a musical alchemist, 'Crazy Genius', a poet and reggae's own George Clinton (good to know they did a collab before his passing.)

Welcome mixtapers to the third session of my dub mixes. This one kicks off with one from the Vanguards of Dub, Iration Steppas followed by Prince Malachi's Guide Me on the Fort Augustus riddim. We turn back the hands of time to the original from Junior Delgado and from this point on its classic roots and dub all the way with Yabby You, Johnny Clarke, Linval Thompson and of course the father of dub himself, King Tubby.

Welcome mixtapers to another jam packed reggae mix. Spreading the reggae gospel onwards and upwards with some upliftment featuring some tunes released around 2005 - 08 from the likes of Damian Marley, Collie Buddz, Luciano, Sizzla, Jah Cure and Morgan Heritage. We then dig a little deeper and go from some classic roots foundation with the likes of Helmsley & Pratt's gem little things and Bobby Melody's scorcher Jah bring I joy. 

Dennis Brown's 80's roots classic easy take it easy was later reworked by the reggae crooner Gregory Isaacs in 2008 titled Babylon too rough which featured on one of my earlier rockers mixes. Another track from my earlier rockers mixes was the dub version of Burning Spear's Invasion so this time round I've gone for the vocal original on this one.

DJ Ridym - Bob Marley

Born 6th February 1945, Robert Nesta Marley aka Tough Gong was the most influential reggae icon to come out of Jamaica. From his early Ska recordings with the Wailers to his later material which was more culturally roots influenced reggae icon Bob sends out a message that spiritually resonates deep in the hearts of the listener. 

This mix covers Bob's transition into Rastafarianism and change in musical styles sticking to some of the original versions such as the Upsetters Lee 'scratch' Perry produced Natural Mystic.

When the Wailers split from Bob they hooked up with producer Coxsonne Dodd and formed the Wailing Wailers with Junior Braithwaite on lead vocals. When you listen to It hurts to be alone its easy to see why Coxsonne believed in him so much and why I had to include it on the mix as the only track that doesn't feature Bob.

DJ Ridym - Reggae Rockers 10 Original Dancehall

Greetings mixtapers and welcome to my latest offering of Reggae Rockers showcasing the best reggae dj's of early Jamaican dancehall music. It was a time when DJ's like Yellowman, Sista Nancy, Brigadier Jerry and Charlie Chaplin were making their name on sounds systems like King Stur Gav, Metromedia and big stage events like Reggae Sunsplash. 

With naughty lyrics from tracks like hotel fee and wreck-a-pum-pum this selection will take you back to those years when dancehall lyrics were fun and something worth listening too in my opinion compared to a lot of modern bling era of dancehall we hear today. Back then you couldn't DJ about the Ferrari you drove or how much champagne you drunk because everyone was broke so you had to dig a little deeper and make it fun. 

So kick back with a red stripe and let the lyrics take you on a journey when dancehall was king.

Greetings one and all to the second instalment of my chapter & verse of DUB series where I bring you the best in dub and roots music.

This weeks instalment has two from Kenny Knots who had a number one hit back in the day with watch all the people dancing recorded by Unity sound system. Kenny went on to record a whole bunch of music working with the bush chemists, Jah Tubbys and currently with Scottish sound system Mungos Hi-Fi

Some more heavyweight dub from Jah Warrior, Dubkasm and Tony Roots make this a speaker popping, chest caving experience you'll no doubt want to turn the bass up for this one!

Greetings mixtapers and welcome to Reggae Rockers 8 for your one stop reggae fix sure to blow your daily stresses away and make you feel irie!

This time round its back to the old skool with some killer cuts starting with Horace Andy's Skylarking followed by the dub version from none other than the nutty professor of Dub Mr Lee "scratch" Perry. Two from Augustus Pablo in steppers classic Think Twice and Let's Get Started. 

King Tubbys dub of Alton Ellis/I'm not the guy was a no brainer for this mix with Bobby Melody's rare groove of roots reggae anthems gives the mix the perfect balance. Ending the mix with the mighty Twinkle Brothers Never Get Burn and finally two Dubs from The Roots Radics Band.

The Roots Radics Band are more known for backing big named artists such as Barington Levy, Gregory Isaacs and Michael Prophet however for Flash Gordon meets Luke Skywalker they've teamed up with dub masters Scientist and Prince Jammy's studio to rework Linval Thompsons Skillful Man to produce this dub nugget.
