DJ Grizz- The Fatback Band

This weekends ‘artist’ mix is from another one of those great bands who made some monsterously good early 70’s Funk tunes before going on to have commercial dancefloor success in the early 80’s.... ladies and gents- The Fatback band. Formed in1970 by band leader Bill Curtis here’s my favorite Fatback tunes spanning both their 70’s and 80’s work- sorry if your fave isn’t in there!
We start with a Funk masterclass in Wicky Wacky, theres a 70’s club hit in Spanish Hustle, a big 80’s popular single in Girls On My Mind, we’ve one of my beloved Summer grooves in Groovy Kinda Day and we end on the tune no Soul party singalong can do without- I Found Lovin’... plus more Fatback gems to enjoy.
Stay in the groove guys!

DJ Ridym - Old Skool 80's

Back as promised with some old skool 80's tunes for you. Artists like Midnight Express, Cameo, Intrigue, Slave all feature.

Also on this mix is the Sugar Hill Gangs soulful track The Lover In Me which I thought would sound better without the rap and interestingly so did DJ SoulnRnB but an SHG recording without a rap? Well I don't think that was going happen but the song is so tight that for me the rap just doesn't work and spoils the track.

I close the mix with Alexander O'Neal's You Were Meant To Be My Lady. Remember singing along to this and tracks like Fools Paradise and Joy and Pain? The 80's, good times!

1. Midnight Express - Danger Zone
2. Cameo - Don't Be So Cool
3. Kinky Fox - So Different
4. Slave - Watching You
5. Feel - I'd Like To
6. Intrigue - Together Forever
7. Sugar Hill Gang - The Lover In You

SoulNRnB's 80s UK Pirate Radio Show on Nuwaveradio

Driving around the UK in the 80's consisted of a driver and somebody tuning the car radio in to the local Pirate Radio station to hear the tracks radio just wouldn't play. Wether it be Kiss FM, Horizon Radio, LWR, Solar..... you would catch the latest Soul, Funk and Boogie joints straight from the Vinyl importers.

Of course, if you were lucky enough to live near some Pirate Broadcasters (and that was tough, cause they constantly moved around to avoid the police) you could always record shows to play on your Walkman, impress friends, and hopefully get the name of the tune in case you could afford to buy it at Groove Records or Bluebird etc

In any case, as Giles Peterson describes at the beginning of this mix,  Pirate radio was sometimes the only way you could hear tunes like the ones played in this show, and we were thankful. Check out the description in the mix on how the stations used to be run and what was involved in keeping them running. And the only payment was the love of this music.

This mix aims to take you back to those days, complete with the tracks you would catch on there whilst out and about, in the two days of summer in the UK.

Check back for Grizz and Ridym here soon, and a bit of trivia: The band singing the Jingles of some of those stations mentioned above that are on this mix are the UK's own The Cool Notes.
