The Soul Mixtapes Review of 2015

It's that time of the year when we look back at the musical releases that peaked our interest, and highlight some of our faves.

LP wise there were a few that stood head and shoulders above the rest. My top 10 is below, but special mention must go out to the excellent Kendrick Lamar LP; When Hip Hop is being decried as dead by most, myself included, this \lp gave hope. Lyrically interesting; Musically satisfying with nods to both Soul and Funk; If you enjoyed the last D'angelo LP then give this a try. You wont regret it.

The Rebirth also returned with a new LP, "Being Thru the Eyes of a Child", which whilst not quite reaching the dizzy heights of "A Journey in", produced some of the best music of the year; "This is coming to" could have been ripped from the aforementioned  debut LP; "Caterpillar" harking back to thier 70's influences, I could go on, but its a must purchase LP wise.

Before I get to the list I must also recommend solid followups from the talents that are Hiatus Kaiyote and The Internet; I really think even bigger things could be coming from these 2 groups, and both LP's pushed boundaries whilst giving us what we expect from these talents.

Anyway, in no particular order, my top 10:

Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly
Bobby Caldwell & Jack Splash - Cool Uncle
SoulPersona - Momentum
The Internet - Ego Death
Aaries - Got Ur Request
Kheyra - Take Flight
Hiatus Kaiyote - Choose your Weapon
Nottz & Rapper Big Pooh - Home Sweet Home
Phony PPL - Yesterdays Tomorrow
Jill Scott - Woman

As for songs, what better way than to listen to some of them? This mix is by no means a definitive selection of my favorite tunes of the year, but there's a generous portion of them!! So before you press play below, let us wish you all a Merry Xmas to you and yours. Grizz will be taking a well needed break this weekend but he will be back with the Rare Groove, Soul and Jazz mixes in the new year. Ill drop a White Label mix for you all just before New year though.

Happy Holidays!!

Its the party season so time to let my rare and dusty grooves collect dust for another week and pull out some of those classic Soul party grooves from the 70's and 80's .... its Soul Weekender Classics.

A selection of familiar tunes for those of us who liked to get our groove on in clubs, parties and weekenders during the early 80's. Hopefully the music and the cover picture will bring back a few memories- thats the equipment us DJ's had to play on many many years ago ( I had a Cloud Series 10 in a state of disrepair in my loft that i couldn't bring myself to throw out until i had kids and needed space!!) DJ Grizz- James Brown Mix

As promised something funky, indeed about as funky as you can get! A whole mix dedicated to the Godfather of Soul, Soul Brother no.1 Mr James Joseph Brown! One of the most influential artists of all time - innovating the funk sound and still heard in breaks and samples all over! We concentrate on the Funk from the late 60's to the mid 70's here.

We kick off with some music with a message in Take Some Leave Some, theres a cool re-edit of Dead On It, the slightly un-PC Its a New Day (although i challenge you fellas not to raise a smile!), theres the familiar Bowie riff used here by JB in Hot, we've one of his many collaborations this time with long term 'James Brown Funky People' stable member Lyn Collins and we end on a track used by TV producers everywhere whenever they need to illustrate anything slightly 'gangsta' - The Boss.
