I'm back with another edition of my Rare Groove mixes.

Some real finds here with names like McFadden and Whitehead and Instant Funk, to real suprises like the sublime track from one Elkie Brooks. (UK readers of my age may remember her for appearences on Daytime TV and Top of the Pops back in the 70's.)

We start the selection with cover guy Chico Hamilton, then flute virtuoso Hubert Laws, an early 80's gem from Jazz Funk royalty Roy Ayres (still gigging hard at 73!), we've keyboard man Rodney Franklin, something for the dancers from the UKs Atmosfear, and something nice from Ramsey Lewis... plus more to check out.

My 1st helping of old time soul and rare grooves for 2014 with Volume 62 of the 'Soul Niceness' series.

The mix includes a late 70's nugget from soul royalty- Solomon Burke, some spacey soul from Dolly Way, a Donna McGhee classic, a Velvet Hammer fave from 77 that puts me in mind of a current RnB big hit, some Bobby Womack, and concludes with a Eugene Record take on a tune better known to rare groove fans by Valerie Carter... plus more good good tunes.

Brand new music from Cover star Eric Roberson whose on course to release 2 LP's this year. "Anymore" comes from the first, a collection of unreleased tunes and B-Sides; Carmen Rogers, fresh from work with The Foreign Exchange and Zo!gives us the great "Make a way"; DeRobert & the Half Truth's release a

We're well into 2014 now - its like xmas never happened (although the credit card tries to remind me!). Time for some 2 minute Soul nuggets from nearly 50 years ago- its 60's Soul 19.

DJ Grizz- The 'Maze' Mix

 

My 1st mix of 2014 so thought I'd better make it a classy one and they don't come any classier than Frankie Beverly and Maze.

 

They started life in the 60's as the Butlers before becoming Raw Soul then Maze. Another one of those groups who are responsible for more 70's & 80's soul and quiet storm anthems than I can do justice to on one mix. The ten features rare groove/weekender classics like Joy and Pain, Back in Stride & Before I Let Go together with mellow groove gems like Happy Feelin's and Lady of Magic plus more timeless nuggets. These guys are still gigging (I saw them about 20 years ago in Brentwood, Essex!) so catch them if you can.
